Gum Disease

Gum disease refers to conditions like Periodontitis and Gingivitis. Gum disease can be prevented by being meticulous about your oral hygiene on a daily basis and also by getting professional maintenance done by your Dental Hygienist.

Gingivitis: Also known as inflammation of the gums, gingivitis can cause swelling, redness and even bleeding of the gums.Fortunately, gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease and does not cause bone or tissue loss. It is reversible if harden plaque is cleaned properly by a Dental Hygienist and maintained at home.

Periodontitis: Periodontitis is the more serious form of gum disease where the gums can pull away from the tooth, bone can be lost, and the teeth may loosen or even fall out. Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults. Periodontal disease and tooth decay are the two biggest threats to dental health.

Some indications of gum disease might be:

  • A change in the colour of your gums
  • Gums that are red around your teeth
  • Gums that bleed every time you brush or floss
  • Bad breath that will not go away
  • A taste of metal in your mouth
  • Shiny, puffy or sore gums
  • Teeth that are sensitive for no reason
